August is Make-A-Will Month

August is National Make-A-Will Month, and we encourage you to set aside time to write your legal will. Everyone needs a will, whether they’re 18 or 80, and it goes well beyond a plan for your assets. Your will can protect your loved ones – humans and pets alike – and help build the community you love as well.

Angelita Valdez is a lifelong resident of Muskegon and has always wanted to give back to the community she loves so much.

“When my sister passed away last year, it really gave me a new perspective on my life,” said Angelita. “I think we typically think of planning for our afterlife when we are older, but at 38, I have begun thinking of my legacy and what my life will mean once I leave this earth. Growing up, I watched my mother and father work tirelessly to make Muskegon a better place to live for the Latino community and to keep my heritage alive. I always knew I wanted to be like them, and it motivated me to get my master’s degree in social work. I have dedicated my career thus far to building a mental health agency that would protect and honor the clients we serve. In giving now, I will be able to ensure that my heart and my compassion will continue to live on, even when I am no longer here.”

If you don’t have an up-to-date will, join Angelita and the others who are taking that step to make a plan and put it in writing. We hope you’ll consider including a gift to the community. If everyone in Muskegon County does this, imagine the resources to support our neighborhoods, schools, trails, favorite beaches, and more!

Talk to your attorney or give us a call. We can share stories of others’ gifts to inspire you and connect you to professional advisors if needed. There’s no better time than now to find some peace of mind in planning for the future.
