This spring, the Community Foundation awarded Strategic Grants to impactful initiatives driving change in education, workforce development, and community trust across Muskegon County.
Expanding Educational Opportunity
- Arbor Circle is strengthening the network of family, friend, and neighbor caregivers through its Great Start to Quality initiative. It is also helping Licensed Exempt Providers meet new state standards and continue supporting vulnerable children.
- Hope Network’s Michigan Education Corps will place AmeriCorps members in local schools to deliver personalized literacy support for K–3 students, building on a strong track record of helping young learners reach reading benchmarks.
- Junior Achievement will engage over 650 students with hands-on financial literacy, career readiness, and entrepreneurial programs, including immersive experiences like JA BizTown and JA Finance Park.
- Read Muskegon is scaling its efforts to meet growing literacy needs, from reentry and ESL programs to afterschool tutoring and workforce-aligned micro-credentials, offering life-changing access to opportunity through literacy.
- West Michigan Symphony is expanding its Tune Up after-school orchestra program to serve more elementary students. The program provides free instruments, instruction, and performance opportunities that support music and academic success.
Driving Workforce and Economic Development
- Michigan Workforce Development Institute’s Access for All initiative will bring more Muskegon residents into skilled trades through hands-on pre-apprenticeship training and wraparound support, targeting historically underserved groups.
Building Safe and Supportive Communities
- Pathfinders is partnering with the City of Muskegon and the Social Justice Commission to launch a Summer Evening Recreational Program for 200–300 youth, offering safe spaces, mentorship, and connection through trauma-informed care.
