From Gardens to Civic Growth: Dr. Richard & Nancy Peters Recognized with 2025 Impact Award

News & Updates

The Community Foundation for Muskegon County’s IMPACT AWARD annually recognizes individuals or organizations that reflect our core values:

  • Promoting hope and opportunity for all—especially youth
  • Fostering collaboration
  • Building an inclusive community
A retired pathologist and a former educator, Dr. Rick and Nancy Peters have built a legacy of quiet, steady service to the Muskegon community. Their work with the Coalition for Community Development—especially through Operation Healthy Heights—helped create neighborhood gardens and engaged local children in planting, nurturing, and growing healthy foods. Additionally, the Peters have supported the causes they care about for years through the Dr. Richard and Nancy Peters Donor-Advised Fund at the Community Foundation for Muskegon County.

Honorees receive a hand-blown glass vase with an etched crystal base, along with a $5,000 award to be given to a nonprofit of their choice. In a true reflection of the Peters’ commitment to the Coalition for Community Development, the $5,000 grant will be awarded to a new CCD initiative: Civic Space: What Matters to You + Me – a collaborative effort to strengthen civic engagement by directly listening to residents. Through surveys and community-driven strategies aimed at bringing more new, younger, and diverse voices into board and volunteer roles, and ensuring programming that responds to what matters most to the community.
