A self-described “systems thinker” and inspiring mentor, Jan Stone left a lasting legacy of creativity, compassion, and hope for a thriving Muskegon community.
A Fruitport graduate, Jan earned her RN certification, a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and a master’s in nursing. Her career culminated in healthcare leadership, retiring in 2016 as COO of Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial in Fremont, MI.
After retiring, Jan devoted her time and energy to the Muskegon community. She enjoyed hiking, kayaking, photography, and music, and was especially passionate about supporting the arts, elder care, and local revitalization efforts.
Jan passed away in 2021, but her legacy lives on through the Janice Stone Fund—an endowed, unrestricted fund that provides permanent resources for Muskegon County.
Unrestricted funds are powerful tools for meeting emerging needs and opportunities. Guided by our Distribution Committee, Jan’s fund has already awarded more than $170,000 in strategic grants to local organizations, including the West Michigan Symphony, READ Muskegon, Junior Achievement, and more. A portion of her first gift also supported the Frauenthal Center Preservation Campaign, helping ensure the continued success of this downtown landmark.
